Edge chipping (breakage) during glass edge grinding is a common issue in brittle glass processing. Specific causes can be investigated four categories: equipment parameters, consumable status, process operation, and raw glass quality:
I. Equipment and Parameter Causes
Excessive grinding speed: Conveyor speed is too high or grinding head feed rate is too large, causing the impact force on the glass edge to exceed the brittle tolerance limit, directly triggering chipping.
Abnormal grinding head position/pressure:inding wheel offset, uneven height, or uneven grinding pressure causes excessive local force, especially when processing irregular glass where insufficient contour tracking accuracy exacerbates the risk.
Cooling system failure Insufficient cooling water pressure, clogged water pipes, or poor water quality fails to dissipate the high temperature generated by grinding in time, causing sudden stress changes and micro-cracks the glass edge, eventually developing into edge chipping.
Excessive equipment vibration: Loose motors, worn conveyor belts/gears with excessive play cause glass displacement or grinding wheel shaking during, leading to unstable grinding trajectories that damage the edges.
II. Consumable Causes
Grinding wheel issues: Poor quality grinding wheels, severe wear without timely replacement, or new grinding not being dressed, where abnormal sharpness of the abrasive particles directly gouges and chips the glass edge.
Positioning component wear: Worn chamfering shafts or offset edge- wheels lead to inaccurate glass positioning, causing collisions during grinding that trigger corner chipping and edge breakage.
III. Process Operation Causes
Unreasonable grinding amount distribution: Single-side grinding exceeds the conventional safety threshold of 2.5mm, or excessive material removal during the rough grinding stage causes edge stress imbalance.
Insecure glass fixing: Insufficient conveyor pressure causes glass displacement during processing, leading to grinding position deviation that triggers edge chipping.
IV. Raw Glass Causes
Inherent defects in raw glass: Micro-cracks, dark, or initial chipping already exist on the edge after glass cutting, which expand during grinding to form larger edge breakages.
Uneven glass stress: Internal stress imbalance caused by temperature or external forces during raw glass production or storage leads to cracking when stress is released during grinding.
